An associate's degree is a two-year college degree. Students earn an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or
Associate of Science (A.S.) degree after completing a curriculum similar to the first two years of a bachelor's degree
program. Many schools also offer a two-year technical or vocational program leading to an Associate of Applied Science
(A.A.S.). Associate's degree-holders earn about 20% to 30% more than high school graduates--this translates to an
average of $6600 more earned income per year. They also enjoy a 30% lower unemployment rate. The associate's degree
provides a solid foundation for further study or vocational training. Graduates either go on to complete the second
half of an undergraduate education, leading to a bachelor's degree, or they can refine their job skills in a focused
